487,190. Rotary furnaces. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23070. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1936. [Class 51 (ii)] An externally-heated rotary drum or retort more particularly for the distillation of zinc has an outer metal supporting structure extending between its ends and in the form of an openwork casing or skeleton framework, which leaves exposed substantial portions of the external surface of the drum. In the construction shown in which the drum is built up of tongue-and-groove blocks 7, the metal framework consists of longitudinal bars or rails 11 secured at their ends to rings 12, which also carry the end walls 13 with the journals 20. Blocks 17 are welded to the rails to provide bearing surfaces for the drum, or additional rigidity may be given to the structure by cables 14 wound helically around the framework and tensioned by screw adjustments or springs. When the supporting structure consists of a cylindrical casing lined by the blocks 7, the apertures in the casing are positioned to expose as much as possible of the joints between the blocks. Alternatively, the supporting structure may consist of intercrossing elements forming a lattice-work, the elements preferably being recessed at the points of intersection. When the drum consists of a one-piece tube, the supporting structure comprises end plates tied together by tension bars, the two ends of which are offset angularly.
