Abstract
487,105. Driving motor-cycle sidecar wheels. SOC. ANON. ATELIERS GILLET, and GILLET, L. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21403. [Classes 79 (ii) and 136 (ii)] The wheel of a motor-cycle sidecar is coaxial with the cycle rear wheel and is adapted to be driven therefrom through a clutch which can be operated either when the vehicle is in motion or stationary. In the construction shown, the sidecar wheel hub 30 is coupled to a shaft 19 adapted to be driven from the motor-cycle wheel hub 1 through a combined clutch and universal joint 17, 18. The member 18 of the universal joint is slidable on the shaft 19 and is normally caused to engage the driving member 17 by means of a spring 28. The clutch is held in the disengaged position, as shown, by a cable 31 operated by the drive. The shaft 19 is carried in bearings 20, 21 in a tube 23 which forms part of the sidecar frame and is connected to the cycle frame by a ball- and-socket joint 12, 26. The cycle wheel hub 1 is secured to a brake drum 7 by bolts 14, the brake drum having an extension 9 rotating in a frame bearing 10 and carrying the driving member 17. The hub 1 is mounted on a sleeve on a bolt 2 which screws into the brake drum and rotates in a bearing 4 in the frame stay 5, so that the wheel can be readily removed after the bolts 2, 14 have been withdrawn. The sidecar wheel hub 30 is mounted similarly to the cycle wheel hub.
