Abstract

486,549. Preventing formation of ice on aircraft. HEADEN, L. A. Dec. 7, 1936, No. 33503. [Class 4] Apparatus for preventing ice formation on aircraft in which an air heater on the engine is in communication with a tube located in the leading portion of the aircraft surfaces comprises a blower C, Fig. 1, for forcing air heated from a muff A surrounding the engine exhaust manifold into tubes H, J located in the leading edges of the wings and formed with forwardly directed jet apertures such that the heated air is maintained at such a pressure in the tube that it is directed as jets against the interior of the leading edge parts K, Fig. 2. Blower C is driven by a windmill which, with its drive shaft, is readily detachable. Pipes H, J are formed in two lengths of differing diameter, H<1>, H2 and J<1>, J<2> respectively, formed with jet apertures H<3>, J<3> of increasing diameter or frequency outwardly. The aggregate cross-sectional areas of all the apertures are less than the mean cross-sectional area of the tube. The connection between the pipe portions may be telescopic to facilitate wing removal. A pipe L provided with a valve L<1> may be used to provide heated air to the cockpit. A byepass valve L<2> permits use of blower C for evacuating heated air from the neighbourhood of the engine in hot climates where wing heating is unnecessary.
