Abstract

505,772. Preventing formation of ice on aircraft. HEADEN, L. A. Nov. 16, 1937, No..31461. [Class 4] An air heater on an aero-engine or the engine exhaust pipe communicates with a blower for forcing the heated air or exhaust gases through conduits directly to the interior of the hinge joints of the control surfaces. In one form, a jacket a, Fig. 1, surrounds an exhaust manifold and communicates with a blower c driven by a windmill d through flexible drive means e, which with the windmill is readily detachable. Outlet b from the blower is connected by pipes f, i, i<1> to branch pipes e, Figs. 1 and 2, parallel with the joints to be heated, which branches are perforated with jet orifices. The branch pipes may be located either as shown in Fig. 3, in which the jets from orifices . m play direct on the rear surface or close against the surface n which is then apertured so that the jets of hot air are directed onto the leading edge of the control surface, or they may be constituted by the control surface spar itself. Fig. 1 shows in dotted lines an alternative arrangement of pipes i, i<1>. The jet apertures m may be holes or narrow slots. Control cocks may be. provided n the pipe-lines.
