Abstract

717,988. Turbines. CZARNECKI, S. June 23, 1952, No. 15792/52. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] A helicopter rotor blade includes passages 84, 85 supplying compressed air from an engine driven compressor in the helicopter to a discharge nozzle 89, which may be in one piece with the blade, or fastened thereto, said passages comprising the major part of the cross-section of the blade, and a heater 97, 98 in each blade, toe arrangement being that the engine driven compressor supplies sufficient power for horizontal flight, and that further power from the heaters is necessary for vertical flight. A solenoid 122 controls through lever 118 a sliding valve 111 cyclically operated to cut off the jet from the retreating blade. Fuel is supplied to the heaters through injectors 101, 102, and ignited by igniters 110, until the heater tubes are sufficiently hot toignite the gases and burn them throughout the cross-section of the heater. In Fig. 1, the engine 20 drives a compressor 27 supplying compressed air to the rotor pylon 25 where it is heated by heat exchange with the engine exhaust led into a duct in the pylon by pipe 21 and exhausting through pipe 39. Inside the rotor hub, Fig. 2, the compressed air passes through an orifice 72 and a flexible pipe 73 to the blade passages. Fuel is supplied to a flexible pipe 109 and to a pipe 108 having a rotatable fluid-tight joint with pipe 107 whence the fuel is distributed along flexible pipes 105. A shield 75 is provided to streamline the passage of compressed air-from the pylon to the orifices 72. Electric controls for the solenoid 122, Fig. 8, and ignition are taken from slip rings 127, 130 and brushes 125, 132 to conductors 124, 133 leading to the blades.
