Abstract

486,477. Printing on curved surfaces. KNAGGS, D. W. April 5, 1937, No. 9628. [Class 100 (ii)] In a machine for printing on articles having hard uneven surfaces, such as glass bottles, wherein the articles are fed into alignment with a pair of jaws operable to engage the articles for the printing operation, the jaws are pivotally and yieldingly supported in resilient engagement with the printing-device. Bottles 4 are fed down an incline 2 into notches in feed discs 5, 6 fixed to the shaft 55 rotated intermittently through a clutch 53, 54; in a modification, an endless-chain conveyer is used in place of the discs. Each bottle in turn is moved into alignment with bevelled jaws 7, 8 mounted in bearings 9, 10 carried by arms 15, 16 which are loosely pivoted in brackets 12, 13 and are supported by springs. The brackets 12, 13 are mounted on an arm 11, the latter being moved towards the former by means of a rotary cam 42 to cause the jaws to grip the bottle and raise it into contact with a rotary printing-cylinder 27, and being moved back, after printing, to release the bottle. The cylinder 27 carries an offset blanket 26 under which is arranged a rubber blanket 21, which, in conjunction with the springs supporting the arms 15, 16, allows for surface irregularities in the bottles.
