Abstract
486,217. Fusible cut-outs ; couplings. LENK, H., and GRUNWALD. E. Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1461. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A connection between a fuse wire of magnesium or its alloys and a copper or like conductor is effected by using magnesium to contact with the similar metal and copper &c. to contact with the conductor, the junction between the magnesium and copper &c. being of a character to exclude air produced, e.g. by rolling, welding, or a coating process. Air may be excluded from the junction by a coating of paint or varnish. The attachment of copper contacts to a fuse of magnesium is shown in Figs. 7b, 8b wherein the fuse wire 1 is gripped between plates 13 of magnesium coated with copper 14. A coating 12 of paint or varnish seals the ends of the bimetallic junction and may also seal the junction laterally, Fig. 7b, or an extension of the copper coating may form the seal. The fuse wire may be completely or partially coated with silver or copper and a central coated portion may carry a bead of readily fusible solder. End caps 6, Fig. 5, of magnesium enclosed in copper 7 may be applied to the fuse 1. An intermediate layer of aluminium, zinc, cadmium, or iron may be applied between the magnesium &c. and the copper.
