Abstract

563,690. Electric couplings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., WOLFSON, H., and SHEPARD, S. C. Feb. 22, 1943, No. 2880. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In securing a wire to a metal surface, the wire is sealed through a metal cup with fusible metal contained therein and the cup is then attached to the surface by melting the fusible metal so as to alloy with the surface. Wires may then be attached to metallic layers on piezoelectric crystals, on the dielectric sheets of condenser plates, or on the surfaces of resistance elements in block form or to sheet metal boxes acting as electrostatic screens for electrical apparatus. Objects may also be similarly attached to suspension wires. The end of the wire 4 is threaded through a hole in the side or base of a copper or other sheet metal cup 6 of circular or other form and provided with a flange 8 and solder or like fusible metal is melted into the cup up to the level of the flange so as to alloy with the wire and cup. The cup with wire attached is united' to the surface by placing the flange thereon and applying a soldering iron or other heater to melt the solder so that it alloys with the surface. The flange may be shaped to fit a convex or concave surface. The end of the wire may be crimped, knurled or otherwise deformed to strengthen the joint.
