Abstract

501,721. Uniting by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1938, No. 26700. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1937. [Class 83 (iv)] A flux-coated arc welding electrode has a smooth-ground end fitted with a conductive covering-cap in intimate contact with the core in order to avoid the necessity for forcing the electrode hard on the work to break off the cover so as to initiate the welding process. The cap may consist of a conductive coating applied by dipping or spraying. Such coatings may consist of drying suspensions of graphite, carbon, soot or fine metal particles or sprayed coatings of copper, silver or aluminium. The electrode is preferably applied to the work before the current is switched on whereupon the cap is melted and the arc thus started. In the Figure a conductive cap 3 is applied over the end of the coated electrode in contact with the end of the core 1.
