[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 14, 1937.] [Class 63] A helmet or other hat has large unobstructed ventilating openings at the junction of the crown and brim. Entering air either plays directly on the forehead or passes between crown and an inner cap to cause a suction through an opening in the crown which draws air past the forehead. The crown 1 may be spaced from the brim by metal straps 6, the sweat-band 4 being also spaced from the brim by blocks 5 of cork. In a modification, the straps 6 are substituted by hinged links, so that the ventilating space may be adjusted.. In another modification, the ventilation openings are at the front and rear only. The crown 10 may be supported from an inner cap by spacing diaphragms 11 radiating from an opening controlled by an iris diaphragm adjusted by a button 17. The flow of air through the contracting and expanding passages causes suction at the opening and draws air past the forehead of the wearer. In another modification, the front of the crown of the helmet is hinged at 1 so that it can be raised or lowered, bellows or sliding blades being provided at the sides of the hinged portion. A perforated metal cylinder 21 may surround the suction opening. The part of the sweat-band. at the forehead may be removed.
