485,750. Towing articles from aircraft. CASTELLI, J. L. A., and FREMONT, A. A. Aug. 24, 1936, No. 23191. [Class 4] Means for towing and dropping articles from aircraft comprise a winding drum on the aircraft and within reach of the operator, a retractable towing or drag device adapted to be connected at one end to the drum and a slip-on safety housing adapted to be connected at the other end of the towing device and to be releasably engaged with the article which is provided with stabilizing or directing surfaces. As shown, a bomb 1 is provided with adjustable vanes 3 and a bush 5 provided with teeth 30. A striker 8 for detonating the bomb is held against the tension of a spring 9 by fingers 11 which are held in a recess in the bush and engage a head 10. The fingers 11 are pivoted to a cable 14 connected by a detachable thimble 16 to a handoperated winch carried on the aircraft. The winch is rotated by a handle 21 which may be moved against the action of a spring 22 and caused to engage apertures in a fixed plate 25. Rotation of the winch is retarded by a toothed plate 26 and a spring (not shown). A sleeve 27 is provided with vanes 39 and with pawls 29. The pawls engage the teeth 30 and their upper ends are disposed in the enlarged portion of a sleeve 35. The upper end of the sleeve 27 is provided with grooves 32, 40 adapted to be engaged by scissor like members 33 expandable against the action of a spring by the pilot. In operation, the members 33 are released and the cable 14 tensioned causing the pawls 29 to free the teeth the scissor members 33 being caused to engage the groove 40. The cable 14 is paid out and the bomb trails. On reaching the objective, engagement of the bomb therewith tensions the cable and withdraws the head which frees the fingers 11 causing release and detonation of the bomb. If it is desired to withdraw the bomb sleeve 27 is released and under the action of the vanes 39 progresses along the cable 14. When the bomb is reached the pawls engage the teeth and the bomb can be drawn in.
