Abstract

Natural silk or rayon is immersed in a bath containing a negatively charged oil emulsion which is gradually discharged by adding thereto an ammonium salt adapted to generate acid and neutralize said negative charge. Preferred reagents are sulphonated olive oil neutralized with sodium carbonate, and ammonium sulphate, chloride or silico-fluoride. Other suitable sulphonated or sulphated oils are menhaden, palm, mustard seed, pea seed, coconut, cotton seed, rapeseed, castor, Neat's foot, peanut, lard, tallow, elaine, corn, sperm, fish oils or mixtures thereof. The proportion of discharging salt is adjusted so that the bath is discharged, and the yarn oiled in 8-15 hrs. Glycerine, glycols or other polyhydroxy compounds may be added to the bath, also acids such as acetic, lactic, phosphoric and citric or ammonium salts thereof. Other suitable sulphonated or sulphated oils are menhaden, palm mustard seed, pea seed, coconut, cotton seed, rape seed, castor, Neat's foot, peanut, lard tallow, elaine, corn, sperm, fish oils or mixtures thereof. The proportion of discharging salt is adjusted so that the bath is discharged and the yarn oiled in 8-15 hrs. Glycerine, glycols or other polyhydroxy compounds may be added to the bath, also acids such as acetic, lactic, phosphoric and citric or ammonium salts thereof.
