Abstract

483,947. Linkwork for conveying rotary motion ; universal joints. HARRIS COUPLING CO., Inc. May 26, 1937, No. 14633. Convention date, June 5, 1936. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] A shaft coupling, permitting of misalignment of the shafts, comprises a coupling member, oppositely arranged crank-arms pivotally mounted in the coupling member, a self-aligning bearing carried by each of the crank - arms, a second coupling member having slots therein for sliding engagement with the bearings and means for connecting oppositely arranged crank-arms with each other. A housing 8 on one shaft has a deep flange 8a to the outer edge of which is secured a cover plate 6, Fig. 1. In the wall 8b are pivoted by means of pins 11, 11a &c. two pairs of oppositely disposed bell-crank levers of which one pair A, B is shown in Fig. 1, the other pair being at 90‹ thereto. Each bellcrank comprises arms 16, 19 ; 16a, 19a &c., the arms 19, 19a and 19b, 19c, Fig. 6, being connected respectively by links 20, 21, and pins 17, 17a &c. The arms 16, 16a &c., carry short shafts 22, 22a, &c. provided at their free ends with levers 23, 23a &c. secured by pins 25, and the levers are pivoted in the cover 6 by pins 27, 27a &c. Each shaft 22, 22a &c. carries a selfaligning ball-bearing roller 28 with an inner arcuate bearing surface 28a. These roller bearings fit slots 29 in a coupling member 31 provided with a boss 32 having a bore 33 for the other shaft. In a modification, Fig. 8, the short shafts 118, 118a &c. are carried by crankarms 116, 116a &c. which extend beyond their pivots 113 and are toothed at their extremities 117, 117a &c. to form interengaging gear segments, the teeth on one of the other pair of arms being shown at 117c. The short shafts carry as before, arms 119, 119a &c. pivoted at 120, 120a &c. to the cover 111. Slidably mounted on each short shaft is a bush 124 driven into a curved roller 126, 126a &c. which has a sliding fit in a curved slot 127, 127a &c. in the coupling member 128. Recesses 131, 133 are provided to clear the offset portions 132 of the gear segments 116, 116a and to permit proper operation of the other pair of gear segments which are at right-angles to the segments 116, 116a.
