Abstract

483,610. Broaching splined holes &c. TRIGGS, W. W. (Lapointe Machine Tool Co.) May 20, 1937, No. 14032. [Class 83 (iii)] In a broach for cutting splined holes, keyway slots or the like, each tooth on the broach is slightly higher and slightly narrower than the preceding tooth so that successive cuts are as shown at 15, Fig. 8, and each tooth has side clearance from the preceding cut. The broach shown in Fig. 1 has several rows 12 of such teeth which may be of serrated, gear tooth, dovetail or other form. In producing a key-way K, with three successive broaches, Fig. 7, the amount of the side clearance decreases from the first roughing broach to the finishing broach which has a clearance no greater than the allowable tolerance.
