[Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iii)] In articles of furniture having folding legs 48, 51 a member 53 is movable axially of the legs from a stowed position to a position in which it prevents collapse of the legs. As shown the member 53 comprises a shelf having cut-away corners and which in the folded position lies beneath the table top 46 and falls, when the table top is held by its edges, to extend the legs, the downward movement being limited by rungs 52 joining the pairs of legs. In a modification the shelf is provided with key-pieces which slide in longitudinal grooves in the legs and have notches which interlock with plates at the lower ends of the grooves. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which the shelf 32 is connected to each of the legs 18 by a rod 43 pivoted at 44 to brackets 45 on the shelf and telescoping in a tube 40 secured in a recess 42 in the leg. When the shelf falls it swings the legs to their extended position, the downward movement being limited by the engagement of the brackets 45 with the upper ends of the tubes 40. The shelf may be cut away to provide knee room or may be replaced by a frame.
