Abstract
483,353. Sand - blast. BROADFIELD, W. H. April 23, 1937, No. 11722. Convention date, April 23, 1936. [Class 60] Metal articles are cleaned by being subected while hot and in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to an abrasive stream from an abrasive throwing wheel. The invention is described with reference to the manufacture of sheet metal. The sheet 9 after leaving the last rollers 10 of the rolling apparatus is delivered to a set of turning rollers which bring the sheet into a vertical plane for passage through a normalizing chamber 14, a treating-chainber 15 in which gaseous reagents convert the scale into a form more easily removable, an abrading chamber 18 and a cooling chamber 32. The abrading chamber is substantially gas tight and a non-oxidizing gas is circulated through pipes 30, 31. At each side of the chamber are a number of abrasive-throwing wheels 20 which may be of the kind described in Specification 464,608 and which simultaneously clean the two sides of the sheet. Spent abrasive is re-deliwered to the supply hopper 26 by conveyers 22. Access to the wheels 20 is by way of removable covers 36.
