Abstract

532,647. Cleaning castings by sand-blast. AMERICAN FOUNDRY EQUIPMENT CO. Sept. 18, 1939, No. 26097. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1938. [Class 60] An abrading machine for cleaning castings, forgings &c. comprises a device A for projecting abrasive material, and a flexible support 70 for rotating the articles W which are advanced through the abrasive stream by an intermittently advancing pusher 103. The abrasive is supplied from a hopper 38 and projected by two bladed wheels A, B in streams Sa, Sb adjusted to different angles. The pusher 103 is returned by a spring or weight 108 to allow an article and preferably a spacer 150 to be introduced and is advanced by a projection 114 of a driven chain 111. The advancing articles first enter a rotating perforated drum 126 which may be separately driven or engage projections 77 on one of three driven chains 89. These carry bars 71 of or faced with non- abrasive material and are draped over driven gears 80, Fig. 4, to form inner and outer loops separated by an adjustable guide 82. The articles are then pushed by succeeding articles through the inner loop 170 by which they are rotated in the abrasive streams, then through a perforated drum 135 similar to 126 where abrasive &c. is discarded and finally through curtains 145 on to a table 144. The used abrasive is carried by screws 49 to a sump 48 whence it is raised by a conveyer 61 to screening and separating apparatus, if desired, to remove foreign material, and then to the hopper 38. In a modification the pusher is mounted so as to be freely rotatable in a chamber into which the articles &c. are introduced through a curtain. The spacer 150 shown comprises two rings 151, 153, Fig. 7, and a rectangular form 152, in three planes at right-angles, joined together, e.g. by welding, stiffened by struts and, if desired, covered with rubber &c.
