Abstract
312,340. Lott, C. I. May 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Centreless grinding; guides and rests.-In a centreless grinding machine for bevelling the ends of rollers for roller bearings or other articles such as tubular articles, the rollers &c. 19 are rotatably received in pockets 16 in a magazine 15 which is traversed between a grinding wheel 11 and a regulating wheel 12. The magazine slides in a longitudinal slot in the work support and the axes of the pockets are inclined to the path of travel at an angle suitable to the bevel required usually from 15‹ to 35‹. The rollers are positioned against shoulders 17 in the pockets at the side of the magazine next to the grinding wheel. The axes of the wheels 11, 12 converge slightly and the axes of the rollers are preferably inclined to the horizontal so that their points of contact with the two wheels are on opposite sides of a plane passing through the centres of the wheels. The rollers may be roughly bevelled before grinding, as shown, or may have sharp corners, the magazine then being adjusted to allow the rollers to approach the grinding wheel during operation or the grinding wheel is provided at the entrance edge with a bevel to facilitate the formation of a rough initial bevel on the rollers. After treating the bevels at one end of the rollers they may be reversed in the same machine or have their remaining ends treated in a separate, machine. The rollers make contact with the regulating wheel first and the openings 18 at the top of the pockets facilitate the washing off of waste material. In a modification, the regulating wheel 12 is replaced by a grinding wheel, both ends of the work then being bevelled simultaneously.
