Abstract
483,132. Massage, pressure-applying, or artificial respiration apparatus; pumps; valves. HUNT, W. T. April 19, 1937, No. 25169. Divided out of 483,111. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] Apparatus for inflating successively or in a desired order a series of cells 2 incorporated in a pad, band or gaiter for massaging or applying pressure to the limbs or other parts of the human body or for artificial respiration comprises a pump 21, a control or reversing valve 33, and an air distributing means in the form of a cylinder 40 to which each of the cells is connected by a pipe 11. The double-acting diaphragm pump 21 is reciprocated by an electric motor or a prime mover connected to a rod 22 and has spring - loaded suction valves 26, 27 connected to a common suction pipe 30 and spring-loaded delivery valves 28, 29 similarly connected to a common delivery pipe 32. The cylinder 40 contains a piston 42 which may be loaded by weights or restrained frictionally by expanding rings or brake blocks. The brake blocks 45 shown have their loading springs adjusted by a pointed screw 48. Due to the resistance offered by the piston the cells are inflated successively in a desired order, and when all are inflated, an adjustable stop 50 on the piston rod 51 snaps a spring-toggle device comprising a lever 52, and a spring - loaded link pin 55, slidably mounted in a stirrup 56 past its dead-centre position so as to raise the valve 33 and connect the cylinder 40 to the suction side of the pump so as to deflate the cells simultaneously. When the cells are all deflated, the valve 33 is snapped back into the position shown and the cycle re-commences. The apparatus may be used to inflate and deflate the gaiter described in Specification 483,111.
