Abstract
1445568 Breathing apparatus DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 Dec 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45049/72 Heading A5T A breathing simulator, particularly in testing breathing equipment comprises a piston I 1 reciprocated in a cylinder 10 by a connecting rod 12 acted on by a double cam follower 13 engaged with a conjugate cam, the latter being driven by a variable speed motor 16 to vary the breathing rate, the cam shape representing a breathing pattern and the outlet pipe 20 representing the human breathing channel. The resistance and inductance components of breathing impedance for simulating mouth breathing are provided by a gauze in a plenum chamber 21 removably attached to the outlet pipe 20. For simulating nose breathing the chamber 21 may be substituted or a further chamber connected thereto. Capacitance is provided by a fixed or variable unswept volume in the cylinder ahead of the piston or by a spring loaded bellows to close the cylinder end. The mask of an oxygen supply apparatus under test is connected to plenum chamber 21, the pressure in chambers 30, 33 being reduced by suction at cocks 34, 35 respectively. Cam 14 may be exchanged for another of a series of differently shaped cams representing different breathing patterns. Connecting rod 12 passes through a seal 32 in a bulkhead 31.
