Abstract

1,030,404. Hand pumps. D. RITCHIE. Jan. 15, 1964 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39105/62. Heading FIN. [Also in Division A5] Artificial respiration apparatus or apparatus for use in noxious atmospheres, comprises a pair of cylinders 16, 17 mounted in a casing each cylinder containing a piston 14, 15 on a piston rod 12, 13 and the pistons being capable of simultaneous operation by handle 8. The cylinders are connected to a facepiece (not shown) via air chambers 22, 23, connections 24, 25 and tubes 26, 27 (not shown). Pistons 14, 15 are provided with non return valves 18, 19 and cylinders 16, 17 with non return valves 20, 21 and rotary disc valves 28, 29. Cylinder 16 is connected by tube 34 to an oxygen source (not shown) which is in communication with cylinder 16 whether valve 28 is open or closed. Cylinder 17 is provided with whistle 35. The casing comprises portions 1, 2 joined by toggle arms 3 (not shown). In use, when handle 8 is pressed downwards valve 18 closes, valve 20 opens and fresh air is passed to the patient; and simultaneously air is forced out of valve 19 while valve 21 is closed. When handle 8 is raised piston valve 18 is opened permitting a charge of fresh air to be drawn into cylinder 10 and valve 20 is closed. Simultaneously air is drawn out of the patient's lungs by cylinder 17 through valve 21, valve 19 being closed. The whistle 35 will blow on each exhale stroke and if there is a blockage on both inhale and exhale strokes.
