[Class 39 (i)] This Specification is too vague and obscure to permit of satisfactory abridgment, but it appears to convey that the discharge in a mercury-vapour rectifier (and possibly other forms of are discharge) is to be quenched by oscillations produced by charges on auxiliary electrodes (either positive or negative). If the minimum of such oscillations is above zero the quenching is completed by space charge layers which may be produced by a control-grid.
