Abstract
482,369. Vacuum cleaners. BIRTMAN ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 24, 1936, No. 23216. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1935. [Class 8 (i)] The height of the nozzle is automatically adjusted to suit carpets of various thickness by means of a wide-tread roller which rides over the surface being heated. The unit comprising the motor 10, fan 11 and nozzle 12 is pivoted on a chassis 14. A bent link 29 pivoted to the nozzle at 31 and to the chassis at 30 bears on the head of the wide-rimmed roller 26 and causes the nozzle to maintain its position relative to the surface of the carpet. The weight of the nozzle portion is counterbalanced by springs 20 associated with bell-crank levers 21 one arm of which takes beneath the fan flange. In a modification, the nozzle-positioning roller 126 runs parallel with the nozzle. The motor &c. unit is substantially counterbalanced on the chassis. The irregularity caused by the tilting of the nozzle is compensated by a flexible lip 112a pressed downwards by the spring 161.
