Abstract

481,743. Feeding webs. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.) Sept. 16, 1936, No. 25253. [Class 100 (i)] In a web-renewing mechanism in which a web from a new roll is attached to an expiring web being fed to a machine by applying lines of adhesive 24 to the replacement roll and bringing it up to the speed of the expiring web by a driving belt, the replacement roll 18 is prepared for attachment of its web by securing its leading end 22 to the body of the roll 18 by means of one or more stickers, 28, Fig. 2, 32, Fig. 3, 35, Fig. 5 and 56, Fig. 8, at a point or points which are so spaced from the adhesive 24 as to leave a zone or zones through which the web alone tears, leaving the stickers intact when adherence is effected and the web commences to be drawn off. The arrows indicate the lines of tear, and 25 indicates a break in the line of adhesive 24 in a position corresponding to the line of action of the driving-belt for the roll. Reinforcing strips 34 may be applied to the web end to assist in directing the tear through the required zone, and in one form, Fig. 8, the printed extremities 49 of the web end which is shaped as shown are provided with weakened lines of perforation or mutilation, 57, to constitute the zone of tear between the stickers 56 and the web ends.
