Means to sever the web after a join is made is also indicated at 33.
As soon as the running web adheres to the adhesive portion on the replacement web end, it is important that the web end is immediately freed from engagement with the body of the roll. This is accomplished by providing a tab means which is adapted to be secured to both the free web end and the body of the roll in a manner which will cause the said tab structure to be torn or otherwise separated as soon as a predetermined strain is applied thereto such as. by the pulling action of the web end when the running web engages the adhesive on the replacement roll.
The tabs herein disclosed may also be used with machines wherein means are provided for applying adhesive to the running web instead of to the end of the web of the replacement roll.
In Figures 1 and 2, a ring form of tab is shown which has very desirable qualities. In this form, some suitable material such as paper is stamped into the form of a rectangular ring 34 and has dabs of adhesive 35-35 applied to two opposite corners thereof, one corner of which is secured to the body B of the replacement roll at the central portion thereof, while the opposite corner is secured to the web end W of the said roll. An adhesive is also applied along the end of the web as indicated at A, except for a limited space where the accelerating belt 29 will engage the roll 28.
During the period that the said replacement roll 28 is rotating, the free end W is adequately held against the body of the roll, but as soon as the running web is brought into contact with the adhesive A on the web end, the strain exerted upon the tab will tend to pull one end away from the other and will rupture or tear the tab latterly across the corners, as indicated by the dot and dash lines in Figure 2.
The circular tab structure 36, shown in Figures 3 and 4, is applied in the same manner as the rectangular ring with one adhesive portion 31 engaging the body B of the roll and another adhesive portion 3 engaging the web end W. When a join is made, the tab is torn along the portion indicated by the dot and dash lines in Figure 4.
When either of the tabs shown in Figures 1 to 4 is used, the action of pulling the web end away from the roll when it adheres to the running web tends to straighten the sides of the ring and thereby stress only the inside edges on each side, which quickly starts tears that immediately sever the tab.
In Figure 5, another form of tab structure is shown applied to a web end having a fish-tail configuration as shown at 38, and in which two tabs 39-35? are provided, one at each end of the fish-tail portion. Each of the tabs 39-39 is of substantially V-formation and has an adhesive M applied over approximately one half of its length on one side and an adhesive 42 applied over approximately one half of its length on the opposite side, as best shown in Figure 6. When securing these tabs in place, one adhesive portion is secured to the body B of the roll, while the other adhesive portion is secured to the web end W, and when. a web join is made, the tabs are torn vertically across the central portions thereof. An adhesive A is also applied to the web end as in the previously described structures.
In Figures. '7, 8, and 9, another arrangement is shown wherein a tab 46 is formed with a central peak portion having an adhesive 41 on its front surface and two end portions 48-48 projecting sideward from said central portion and having adhesive 49-49 applied on their rear surfaces. The adhesive ends are secured to the body of the roll and the central adhesive portion is secured to the free end of the roll, the edge of the said free end being shaped to conform with the peak formation of the tab. When a join is made, the tab will be torn along the lines indicated by the outer boundaries of the adhesive portion 41.
To further assist in the tearing of this form of tab, the ends may be formed so as to project angularly upward as shown at ma-48a in Figures 10 and 11, to provide sharp V-shaped portions at 53-50. The adhesive portions will be applied in the same position as previously described for Figures 8 and 9.
It will be observed that in each of the tab structures disclosed, there are no weak portions in the material structure such as perforations, slits, or the like, but that the full strength of the material structure is maintained throughout the tab.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiments be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
