Abstract

555,707. Feeding webs. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. June 19, 1942, No. 8463. Convention date, July 22, 1941. [Class 100 (i)] To facilitate the web renewing operation in a printing press or other machine, the rolls are prepared with a coating of adhesive at the outer surface of the leading end of the web and also at the opposite side of the web near its core, the adhesive being of a kind which will not adhere to the uncoated web surface but will adhere strongly to a similar adhesive coating. In operation, the new roll is brought into contact with the running web so that it is rotated thereby but does not adhere thereto until the adhesive on the running web contacts with that on the new roll whereupon the end of the new roll, which was previously lightly attached to the body of the roll in the usual way, becomes attached to the old web which is afterwards broken or severed by a knife. The adhesive, which may be any suitable non-vulcanizing rubber cement, such as unvulcanized rubber in a suitable solvent is applied as a layer 16, Fig. 2, to the outer surface of the end 13 of the web 26 or to a separate web section adhered to the end of the web, and also as a layer 17 on the opposite side near the core end of the web, or, as shown, to a separate strip 19 adhered to the web 26. The layer 17 is at least as long as the circumference of the roll to ensure contact with the layer 16 of the contacting roll. To prevent possibility of adherence between the layer 17 and the adjacent layers of the web, a layer 23 of adhesive-repellent, such as wax may be applied to the web at the rear of the layer 17. A line of perforations may be provided at the rear of the layer 17 to facilitate breaking of the old web during the renewing operation.
