Abstract
Palladium in a form particularly suitable for catalytic use is obtained by treating small pieces of metal including balls of wire, flakes or rolls of foil, by cleaning the surface and repeated sorption of hydrogen at below 70 DEG C. and its discharge by thermic disassociation. The product may also be used for boiling spheres, pen nib points and for jewellery, as for example, bracelets, necklets and other articles, in some instances coloured superficially as by anodic oxidation or by heating in air. Although the sorption may be in an electrolytic cell, it is preferably from gaseous hydrogen, and the discharge effected by direct combustion on the metal. The effect of repeated sorption and discharge is to make the pieces, bales and rolls approximate to a spherical shape, and the flakes to wrinkle up without cracking. The product may be used alone or as a carrier for palladium black or other catalyst. Other metals or metalloids such as gold, silver, copper, osmium, ruthenium, nickel, cobalt, silicon, boron, zirconium, &c., may be incorporated by embedding the palladium body in a powdered mass of the material or electroplating it and heating at 600 to 1200 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere, or by impregnating with salts, reducing and heating.ALSO:Palladium in a form particularly suitable for catalytic use is obtained by treating small pieces of metal, including balls of wire, flakes or rolls of foil, by cleaning the surface and repeated sorption of hydrogen at below 70 DEG C. and its discharge by thermic disassociation.
