Abstract
A catalyst, particularly for use in the oxidation of ammonia, consists of an alloy containing at least one metal of the platinum group which is coated with a solid surface of substantially pure platinum, the platinum preferably being equal in weight to 0,1 to 1,0 per cent of the whole mass. The alloy preferably contains two metals of the platinum group, particularly platinum and rhodium, but alloys of platinum with palladium, ruthenium &c., and also ternary alloys and alloys containing base metals, e.g. nickel, cobalt, silver and copper may be used. The platinum-rhodium alloy preferably has a rhodium content between 0,5 and 50,0 per cent, e.g. 90 per cent platinum and 10 per cent rhodium. The catalyst may be in the form of wire gauze, perforated sheets, narrow strips or small particles.
