Abstract
Catalytic reactions, especially oxidizing reactions such as the oxidation of methyl alcohol to formaldehyde, or the reduction of carbon monoxide, are carried out with the aid of alloys wf rhenium as catalysts. Rhenium may be alloyed with noble metals, such as platinum, rhodium, iridium, or silver, with base metals such as copper, or with both noble and base metals. Supports such as wires or networks made of platinum, platinum alloys, silver, silver-copper alloys or copper may be provided with a coating of rhenium or rhenium alloys, the coating alloying with the support by diffusion.ALSO:Catalytic reactions, especially oxidizing reactions such as the oxidation of ammonia, or methyl alcohol to formaldehyde, or the reduction of carbon monoxide, are carried out with the aid of alloys of rhenium as catalysts. Rhenium may be alloyed with noble metals, such as platinum, rhodium, iridium, or silver, with base metals such as copper, or with both noble and base metals. If platinum forms part of the alloy, it is desirable to add small quantities of one or more other metals, such as iridium, iron, nickel, or cobalt, to improve the mechanical properties of the catalyst. Supports such as wires or networks made of platinum, platinum alloys, silver, silver-copper alloys, or copper may be provided with a coating of rhenium or rhenium alloys, the coating alloying with the support by diffusion.ALSO:Rhenium may be alloyed with noble metals, such as platinum, rhodium, iridium, or silver, with base metals such as copper, or with both noble and base metals. These alloys, especially when containing platinum, are improved by the addition of one or more further metals, such as iridium, iron, nickel or cobalt, preferably in small quantities. The addition is stated to improve the mechanical properties of the alloy and prevent grain growth.
