[Class 40 (iii)] A cathode ray is so deflected during its return stroke that it does not impinge on the field of the image. An additional potential is superposed on the potential from the image-frequency oscillator 2 during the return period of the linefrequency oscillator 1 such that the ray is deflected outside the edge of the image. The additional potential is generated by a discharge tube 8, which is ignited at the end of each scanning-line by the synchronizing signal and is quenched by a second discharge tube 9 in parallel, which is ignited through a powderediron cored transformer 10 by the potential peaks in the line-frequency oscillator at the beginning of the scanning-lines. The consequent drop of potential 'is such that both tubes cease to discharge. The additional potential is superposed on the image-frequency potential by a transformer 5 with a compressed powdered-iron core.
