Abstract
480,804. Subaqueous audible and like signalling apparatus. HUGHES, A. J., and HUGHES & SON, Ltd., H. Dec. 3, 1936, No. 27124. [Class 118 (ii)] Receiving and transmitting units, or a single unit used for both receiving and transmitting, are mounted in a streamlined casing consisting of a transversely curved hood tapering longitudinally and closed at the bottom by a flat plate through which the oscillations are transmitted and received. As shown, the apparatus comprises a five-compartmented casing. The compartments 11 and 13 which house the oscillators 16 and reflectors 17 are filled with fresh water by means of plugs 26 and are separated by an air-filled sound-insulating compartment 12 which prevents direct transmission of sound from the transmitting oscillator to the receiving oscillator. Compartments 10 and 14 are airfilled buoyancy chambers and house columns 27 by which the mitt is connected to the supports on the boat. The oscillators 16 are preferably of the magnetostrictive type.
