Abstract
563,977. Sealing holes in ships' hulls. NEELANDS, A. R., PITTARD, A. R., WALLACE, G., and CEMENTATION CO., Ltd. April 1, 1943, No. 5255. [Class 113 (i)] Apparatus for sealing an under - water hole in a ship's hull comprises a bag in mesh form which is larger than the hole, is inserted therein so as to be partly inside and partly outside, and then expanded by material capable of setting under water to produce a substantially #-shaped formation. The bag may be made of malleable iron, copper fibre, cloth, rubber, or leather, and, in addition to the setting material, may also contain inert material such as ballast, broken brick or pottery, lumps of glass, road metal, or small cubes of wood. The bag B is secured to the broken edges C, C<1> of the hole by means of U-shaped spring clips D, D<1> with beaded edges, these clips being introduced through an opening on the outer side of the bag which is then covered by a bolted-on plate E adjustably connected by a steel distance rod F with a large washer G on the opposite side of the bag. Flexible feed pipes K, L for cement are connected to the top and bottom of the bag.
