Determining distances acoustically.-A buoy 1 for sounding the depth of water is adapted to be actuated from a remote point, so that a ship may ascertain in advance the depth at points where such buoys are stationed along the route. Electric, acoustic, or optical waves emitted from the ship actuate through a receiver 2 a relay 3, which closes an auxiliary circuit including a relay 4a for opening a valve 4. The opening of the valve supplies energy from a receiver 5 to a soundtransmitter device 6. At the same time a second relay 7 in the auxiliary circuit, or if preferred, the same relay 4<a> releases a detent for a sinker 8, which on striking the bottom emits a sound. The. lapse of time between the sounds from the two devices 6, 8 provides a measure of the depth. A fresh sinker is positioned automatically in place of the old one, and the relays are deenergized in readiness for a fresh signal from a ship.
