Abstract
480,520. Diminishing recoil of guns. HUGHES, R. H. S., and ROBERTS, M. May 19, 1936, No. 14152. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 12, 1937.] [Classes 92 (ii) and 119] A muzzle-attachment 8, Fig. 2, for diminishing recoil, stated to be applicable to rifles, pistols, shot guns and ordnance, comprises an expansion-chamber 9 for the gases following the projectile, a shoulder 15 on which the gases act when the projectile seals the passage 11, and rearwardly-directed ports 12 for the escape of the gases. It is stated that the area of the shoulder 15 coincides with the base of the cone of gas leaving the muzzle at an angle of 40‹ to 45‹, and that the total area of the ports 12 is equal to the combined area of the shoulder 15 and the seal passage 11. The inclination of the ports 12 to the axis of the gun bore may be varied, the preferred angle being 30‹ as shown. To act as a shield against the rearward discharge of the gases, a flange 18 is provided on the attachment and the flange may support a screen 33 of fine mesh as shown in Fig. 9. To correct " jump " on firing and to prevent downward blast of the gases the ports 12 may be omitted from the lower part of the attachment. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 8995/04, 131,040, 161,082, and 233,709, [all in Class 119].
