Abstract

480,100. Magnetos. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 19, 1936, No. 17085. Convention date, June 20, 1935. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXII] A magneto rotor comprises a shaft 1, polepieces 4 arranged circumferentially about the shaft and a permanent magnet 3 cast around the shaft and polepieces. The shaft which is preferably knurled or fluted at 2, and the polepieces which are preferably bevelled and provided with serrations on their inner faces, are placed in a mould, treated with a flux and the permanent magnet material, which may be an aluminium-nickel-iron alloy is poured into the mould. The melting points of the shaft, polepieces and magnet are nearly the same so that after cooling, the structure forms an integral unit. The mould may be chilled after the casting operation, or the rotor may be re-heated and quenched. The rotor is magnetized by placing the polepieces in a magnetic circuit of high intensity.
