Abstract

<PICT:0479492/IV/1> <PICT:0479492/IV/2> Foils or bands of a highly polymerized organic thermoplastic material are contacted when in a non-plastic state and free from volatile solvents with one or more surfaces heated highly enough to render the foils or bands plastic, and they are drawn without application of pressure over the heated surface and stretched. The thermoplastic material may be a cellulose derivative such as benzyl cellulose, or a polymerization or interpolymerization product of vinyl chloride, styrene, vinyl carbazole, an acrylic ester or a homologue thereof, or after-chlorinated polymerized vinyl chloride. Halogenated and hydrohalogenated rubber are excluded. The foils may be coated with talc, metal oxides, or other solids or liquids in order to prevent them sticking to the heated surface, or they may have scratched surfaces. Cylinders or drums may serve as heated surfaces. Towards the ends they may be of reduced diameter with arched surfaces. The foils may be stretched transversely as well as longitudinally. They may be used for electrical insulation purposes, e.g. in condensers, or for thermal insulation particularly in cr<\>zeped form, or as packing material, adhesive films, or coverings. Small bands may be stretched into fine threads, and these may be used for the production of yarns, or used for upholstering. As shown in Fig. 1, foil 2 from roll 1 is supplied by rubber-covered rolls 3 to the heated rotatable cylinder 4 and is converted on the latter into a thermoplastic state. The speed of cylinder 4 may be different from that at which the foil is supplied. The foil is stretched by the winding drum 5 which has a higher speed than the conveyer rolls 3. The heated cylinder 4 is dusted with talc by a coated asbestos wool pad 6. Two or more heated cylinders may be used, and the foils on leaving the hot surfaces may be cooled. The foils may be stretched longitudinally and transversely by endless bands 9 provided with steel points 10. In examples, foils of after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, a mixed polymer of vinyl chloride and an acrylic ester, and polyvinyl chloride are passed over a heated cylinder and stretched while plastic.
