Abstract

An improved pour point depressant is obtained by subjecting to relatively mild treatment with silent electric discharge, to such an extent that the viscosity is increased by between 1--100 per cent, a crude synthetic hydrocarbon oil consisting of an alkyl-aryl condensation product, preferably from aliphatic reagents having a straight chain of 10--30 or more carbon atoms, e.g. the viscous oil obtained by condensing chlorinated paraffin wax with naphthalene in the presence of aluminium chloride. The treatment with silent electric discharge may be conducted in the presence of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, natural gas, water gas, coke oven gas, &c. An example is given of the preparation of a synthetic oil by chlorinating paraffin wax and condensing with naphthalene and of the treatment of such oil with silent electric discharge. U.S.A. Specification 1,815,022 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also subjecting the synthetic oil to intensive treatment to produce blending agents for lubricating oils adapted to increase viscosity and viscosity index, and, in small amounts, to act as oxidation inhibitors. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
