[Class 94 (i)] In machines for packeting cigarettes &c. in cartons of the slide and shell type, the driving- mechanism is arranged so as to drive, if necessary, duplicate feeding and filling mechanisms. The turret 1, shown in plan, is adapted to be intermittently rotated by a central driving shaft 2, preferably by gears 3, 4, 5 and pin 6 as described in Specification 466,176. The upper surface is provided with radial grooves 8 for locating means 9 for receiving the slides 10 of the cartons from a slide feed 11. The turret rotates anticlockwise to present the slide at a station where a foil-wrapped packet of cigarettes is inserted from a filler unit 12. At a subsequent station, the slides and packets are removed from the turret and inserted into the shells by a radially arranged unit 13. The main units 11, 12, 13 are driven by radial countershafts 14, 15, 16 by a bevel gear 17 and bevel pinions 18, 19, 20. The countershafts 14, 16 are provided with bevel pinions 21, 22 meshing with pinions 23, 24 respectively, the latter being associated with the drive shafts of the operating mechanisms at these stations. Supplementary or duplex mechanisms 25, 26 may be mounted on the opposite sides of the countershafts to the main units so as to be driven from the pinions 21, 22 by pinions 34, 35. The countershaft 15 drives the shaft 37 of the filling unit through skew gears 38, 39, adjacent to which on the shaft 37 a bevel pinion 30 drives a pinion 33 on the shaft 32 of the supplementary unit. The supplementary units are merely bolted in place when required and may be removed without disturbing the chain of gears.
