Abstract

A plurality of yarns are assembled in side-by-side relation and are passed through a group of baths in which the yarns are dyed, a positive feed being applied to the yarns prior to their immersion in the first bath as well as a resilient tension applied to the yarns prior to their engagement with the first feeding means, to effect feeding of the yarns into the first bath while preventing sudden increases of tension. The sheet or ribbon of yarns after passing through a dye vat may be dried as it issues from the vat, and then sized and again dried, the yarns being separated between the first drying operation and the sizing bath. The yarn is unwound from a series of drums or beams 11, Fig. 2a, supported on a frame 10, or from a series of spools, with the yarns lying side by side, and are passed, through a comb if desired, over feeding and tensioning devices indicated at B, comprising, in the form shown, three feed rollers 21 driven at equal speeds from a continuously rotating shaft 26 and a tension roll 29, the springs 30 attached to which yield to relieve the tension on the yarns in starting the beams 11 to revolve. The sheet or ribbon of yarn is next passed through a dyeing apparatus C comprising a dye vat 33, Figs. 2a, 2b, on which is mounted squeeze rolls 56, 73, the pressure of the upper of which against the lower may be regulated to squeeze liquid from the yarn in its passage from one part of the vat to another. The yarn next passes around practically the whole periphery of a drying drum D, Figs. 2b, 2c, from two guide <PICT:0478687/IV/1> <PICT:0478687/IV/2> <PICT:0478687/IV/3> <PICT:0478687/IV/4> rollers above which the yarn passes over rods 126, Fig. 2c, which separate any adhering strands, to three evener rolls 127 and to a sizing apparatus E. From the forward squeezing rolls of the sizing apparatus E the yarn passes under a guide roller around a second drying drum F, Figs. 2c. 2d, similar in construction to the first drum D, and around a series of rollers, fans being arranged adjacent the runs of material in the vicinity of the drying drum to assist in drying the material. From the last of these rollers 180, Fig. 2d, the sheet or ribbon passes through rods 215 to an adjustable comb 216 and thence alternately under and over tensioning rods 240 to callender rolls. A presser roll or rod 255 bears, under the action of a weighted arm, on the material to press it against a beam on which it is being rolled, a ratchet and pawl device being provided to prevent this when not desired. The speed of the shaft 85, Fig. 2b, from which the various squeeze and feed rollers are driven is regulated by a double cone belt drive, one cone being on the main driving shaft, to prevent substantial tensioning of the yarns during their passage to the beaming position and to positively beam the yarns at substantially the same speed as they are passed to it.
