Abstract

478,529. Looms with stationary-weft supplies. CLUTSOM, C. Sept. 19, 1936, Nos. 25525 and 27641. [Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iv)] In smallware and other looms for weaving elastic webs, such as ribbons and braids and also fabrics for corsets, belts, girdles, &c., the weft e from a bobbin, spool, cone or cop is inserted by a pivoted curved thread guide 4 furnished with an eye 5 and formed or carried by a radial arm &c. 6 screwed to a plate 8 having a boss turning on a stud 10 on a bracket 3, which can be applied to or removed from the loom. The arm 6 has a bent part located between pins 48, Fig. 13, on a block attached to a cam-actuated slide bar 43, whereby the guide is moved across the shed to insert a loop of weft, which is engaged by an inclined latch needle 2 on a bar 15. This is reciprocated between guide plates 16, 17 on the bracket 3 by a peg &c. 18 connected by a link 60 to an arm 59 on a rock-shaft, which is rocked by a cam-controlled lever 61. The needle bar may be acted upon by blade springs 24, 26 and be raised at its forward end by a fixed cam 22, when it is moving forwards. The fabric ,may be guided near the fell by passage through a slot in a guide 27, after which it passes over a roller 32. A brush 34 ensures opening of the latch 14 of the needle, which engages the inserted weft loop and draws it through a previous loop to produce a selvage, as shown in Fig. 10. The forward edge of the plate 16 constitutes a knocking over edge to facilitate formation of the selvage. The parts carried by the bracket 3 constitute a removable unit or attachment, the bracket 3 being provided with holes 38 for attachment by screws 40 to a longitudinal frame member 41. The thread may be tensioned by passage between spring- pressed discs. The slide bar may be supported by rollers 47. Instead of or in addition to the cam for deflecting the needle when it is advanced, a separate finger &c. may be operated to pull or push the weft thread into engagement with the needle when this is advanced. In a modification for double-faced fabrics, two weft laying members 4, 67, Fig. 16, disposed one above the other are actuated together to insert two weft threads, which may differ in character and /or colour, e.g. silk or artificial silk and cotton or wool, through a double shed of corresponding dissimilar warps to produce a fabric with silk or artificial silk front and a cotton or wool back. A needle 2 level with the member 4 is used to form a looped selvage of both wefts. The carrier bar of the member 67 is provided with a pivoted finger 70 acted upon by a fixed cam plate whereby when the member 67 is advanced, the finger 70 is rocked, and its forward end is lowered to move the weft carried by the member 67 into contact with the needle, so that both wefts may be engaged by the needle hook. If desired, the needle may form only one of the wefts into loops, the other being laid or brought below the latch of the needle, so that it is cast off and passes round the loops of the other thread. The needle may be curved or inclined for this purpose, or a separate finger, similar to the finger 70 may be used. Looped or knitted selvages may be formed at both edges of the fabric and in double-faced fabrics there may be two knitting needles at each side, one for each thread. Several pieces of fabric may be woven simultaneously face to face. According to the first Provisional Specification, a thread laying member, which is reciprocated, may be used. The loom may be used for weaving elastic fabrics for corsets, belts, girdles, &c. and for ribbons, braids, &c., or for weaving ordinary fabrics.
