[Class 9 (i)] An undershot wad, more especially for use in sporting-cartridges, comprises a cardboard, metal &c. cylinder 6, Fig. 1, closed at its front end by disc and frustum shaped portions 7 and 8 respectively. The cylinder is filled with a resilient material 13, such as sawdust, cork, crinkled paper, corrugated cardboard or ordinary or sponge rubber, and has its rear end closed by a cardboard, cork &c. disc 14. The walls of the cylinder may be formed with longitudinal or circular ribs and the portion 8 may be provided with perforations 9, a disc 11 of lubricant being arranged as shown between washers 10, 12. When a shot is fired, the disc 14 is forced forwardly by the gas pressure and acts as a piston in the cylinder so as to compress the material 13 thereby expanding the middle portion of the wall of the cylinder into intimate contact with the gun barrel. The rear portion of the cylinder wall is also similarly expanded by the gases entering the chamber formed by the forward movement of the disc 14. The gas pressure is also communicated through the material 13 to the disc 11 so that lubricant is caused to ooze through the perforations 9. An annular wad 15 is arranged as shown in front of the disc portion 7. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modified construction of wad, Fig. 3 (Cancelled), consisting of a jacket or cylinder 6<1> filled with washers 131 of agglomerated cork &c. and having a cavity 17 therebetween. A disc 18, which acts in a similar manner to the disc 14, Fig. 1, is placed on the rear end of the washers 13<1> and a cap 19 of paraffin or other suitable lubricating material covers the front portion of the jacket 6<1>.
