Abstract

477,907. Valves. WESLAKE, H. July 9, 1936, No. 19057. [Class 7 (vi)] In poppet valves in which the stem is provided with a core of good thermal conductivity having an enlarged head which is retained within a recess in the valve head bv a steel plate secured to the valve head, this retaining-plate is united with the head of the core by soldering, brazing, or welding, in order to effect a more rapid transference of the heat from the valve head The Figure shows a valve with a core 15 of copper having a head 17, to which the retaining-plate 18 is united by soldering &c. The core is formed with a longitudinal slot 19, and a gap is left at 21, to allow for expansion. The plate 18 is formed with an iron spindle 16 which is a snug fit within the core. In a modification, the core consists of copper tubing flared at its upper end to correspond to the shape of the valve, and the retaining - plate is united to the core along the flared portion. In another form, the spindle 16 is omitted, and the core partially filled with a salt or material which becomes liquid when heated, such as sodium nitrate or metallic sodium. The core head and the recess in the valve may be undercut so that they contact only over a narrow surface when cold. Specification 448,463 is referred to.
