Abstract
190,585. Meigh, C. H. Oct. 21, 1921. Hollow - ware, t u b e s ; knobs. - Hollow, jointless, ribbed metal articles such as radiator elements, floats, reservoirs &c. are made by flattening a mass of metal which has been made hollow by drilling, and then working the flattened mass by rolling, stamping &c. to reduce the thickness of the metal and bring it to such a configuration that on subsequent expansion by internal pressure the required ribbed article will be produced. The internal recesses of the rough mass may be filled with a substance to prevent adherence of opposite faces during flattening, or internal welding may be arranged to take place at required positions by suitable disposition of a flux. Moulds may be used for giving the required shape to the article during expansion. Fig. 4 shows an embodiment in which a tube-section is flattened and rolled to reduce thickness at a, a', Fig. 5, internal pressure then being applied to expand the work to the ribbed form shown in Fig. 6.
