Abstract

477,835. Alternating-current motors. FERRANTI, Ltd., and GRUNDY, E. July 1, 1936, No. 18209. [Class 35] In a synchronous motor having a non- varying field system, e.g. a permanently magnetized rotor 8 and a cyclically varying field system and having all rotating parts disposed on a spindle between the bearings, the spindle is carried by a plate 13 having a rebated periphery 15 to provide thrust against the stator teeth to hold them in correct relationship with the rotor teeth. The stator comprises two cup-shaped members 1, 3 with teeth 2, 4 and riveted to a hollow shaft 5 which is surrounded by the coil 6. The rotor 8 mounted on the spindle 7 has its teeth 9, 10 of north polarity, and its teeth 91, 10<1> of south polarity, and the spacing of the teeth is shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the spindle is journalled in a bearing 17 carried by a sleeve 16 integral and coaxial with the plate 13, the sleeve having a slot 18 to enable a pinion 11 on the spindle to be engaged by a gear train. The plate 13 is recessed concentrically to accommodate a pivoted pawl 19 urged towards a cam 12 by a bow spring 21, the rotor being thus rotatable in one direction only. By rotating the plate 13, the pawl can be brought into such a position that if the rotor is arrested with a cam face adjacent the pawl, the rotor teeth will be correctly located with respect to the stator teeth to permit starting. A pin 23 prevents the pawl from moving too far inwards. Specification 388,739 is referred to.
