[Class 85] [Also in Group XXVI] A stuffing-box for a well drill stem comprises a rotatable member 16, carrying packing 22 engaging the flat-sided drill stem, and tiltably mounted in a box 10 carrying packing 31. A flange 25 on the rotatable member is supported between a resiliently supported bearing ring 21 and a ball bearing 34, having an adjustable spherical seating 38 whereby the member 16 is permitted limited universal movement to compensate for misalignment of the drill connections. Lubricant is supplied to the bearings through a passage 44. A bushing 20 in the member 16 is grooved at 50 for access of well pumping fluid to dissipate heat generated by friction between the member 16 and packing 31. In a modification, Fig. 7, the rotary member 55 is supported on an arcuate flange 52 formed on a stationary sleeve 51. The upper arcuate bearing portion may be replaced by a flat resiliently mounted member 56, Fig. 8.
