[Class 85] A swivel for use in rotary well-drilling apparatus comprises a body 1 to which a bail 2 is secured by trunnions 3 held by plates 7 ; within the body is a platform 8 reinforced by internal integral ribs 11. The anchor plate 18 for the main bearing 9 is held to the platform 8 by studs 22, Fig. 8, and nuts 23 enclosed in pockets 24 closed by plugs 25. Upthrust bearing 12 and radial bearings 13, 17, are removable with the stem 15 and main bearing 9 as a unit ; a threaded collar 19 permits adjustment of the bearings. Acap 14 closes the body and has a bushing 28, Figs. 3 and 9, pressed in its bore ; a bonnet 26, threaded against an inclined shoulder 27 on the stem, overlaps the bushing 28, leaving an annular space for a sealing ring 30 to which lubricant may be supplied through fitting 32. The wash pipe 16 is sealed in the stem 15 by packings 36, 39, spaced by a flanged lantern ring 34 clamped by a bonnet 33 threaded to the stem ; packings 36 are pressed by a spring 37 and supplied with lubricant through a fitting 38, leaking lubricant passing away through a vent 40. Lubricant is supplied to the body 1 through an opening 41, Fig. 12, and a pipe 43, openings 44 in the platform 8 and 47, Fig. 3, in the ribs 11 allowing circulation of lubricant to the bearings. A bushing 48 is pressed into the lower end of the body and a cap 49 is bolted thereto and contains sealing rings 52 which may be surmounted by a plain packing ring.
