Abstract

446,851. Well - drilling apparatus. NATIONAL SUPPLY CORPORATION, 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Cheadle Heath, Stockport. Feb. 25, 1935, No. 6020. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1934. [Class 85] In a swivel for well - drilling apparatus with two relatively rotatable fluid conducting members, packing is provided in a recess between such members and means for introducing lubricant under pressure to such packing which is arranged to oppose the pressure within the members while permitting lubricant to pass in a direction opposed to such pressure. In Figs. 1 and 4, main bearing 9, upthrust bearing 10 and radial bearings 11, 12 are supported on the swivel stem 8 so as to be removable as a unit. An anchor plate 17 between the main and upthrust bearings is held in the swivel body 1 by the lower edge 19 of the cap 2 which is secured by bolts 7 and has detachable trunnions for engagement with the lifting bails. The main bearing 9 includes upper race plates 13 held to the head 21 of sleeve 8 by spring-pressed dowels 23. The bearings 10, 11 are adjusted by a threaded sleeve 28 locked by a screw 29. An upper oil seal 31 in the cap includes a fitting 34 through which lubricant is forced under pressure past rings 33. The wash pipe 41 is passed downwardly through a member 37 carried by the cap, the member being then closed by a cap 44. Between the wash pipe and the sleeve 8 is packing removable as a unit with threaded container 47 and including lower V-shaped packing rings 52 pressed by spring 55 and follower 56, which is apertured for passage of circulating fluid to the rings 52, and similar rings 53 between rings 62, 63 ; connections 65, 67 convey lubricant to the packings. In Fig. 5, the anchor plate 17a is held down by a ring 71a and bolts 72a; a combined radial and upthrust bearing 70a is provided and bears on a slidable sleeve 73a, a spring 75a acting between sleeve 73a and plate 17a. The packing rings 54a, 61a, and spring 55a are inserted directly into the swivel stem 8a. In Fig. 7, both radial bearings 11<b>, 12b are arranged below the head of the swivel stem 8<b> with the upthrust bearing 10<b> interposed. A spacing sleeve 112b is provided. The lower radial bearing is pressed on the stem 8b or held by a threaded collar &c., and its outer race ring is pressed into the body 1<b>.
