Abstract
507,098. Drilling mains under pressure. COOKE, F. Feb. 12, 1938, No. 4437. [Class 83 (iii)] In a device for drilling mains under pressure, of the kind comprising a drilling head a attached to a split saddle E on the main F, with the interposition of a shut of valve V, the drill spindle B carrying an annular cutter B<1> and a centre drill B<2> is supported by a sleeve b which is slidable within a bearing G of the head a. The sleeve has an easy fit on the spindle and makes contact therewith by means of end flanges b<1>, b<2>, either or both of which may be packed, and external packing b<3> is provided. A' piston or spider C is attached to the forward end of the sleeve and in operation the sleeve and spindle are in the retracted position shown in Fig. 1 until the valve V is opened. The spindle is then rotated by gearing in a sliding bracket A which is fed forwards by a screwed spindle B<4> and the sleeve b remains stationary until the bracket A meets the flange b<2> (as shown) dotted in Fig. 1. Further advance of the bracket and spindle carries forward the sleeve and spider C so that the spindle will be supported near the drill whilst the main is being perforated, a flange a<4>, Fig. 4, in the head a limiting the axial motion of the sleeve. The spider C may carry anti-friction parts bearing on the head a.
