477,064. Hardening rails &c. THORNTON, A. A. (Bochumer Verein f³r Gusstahlfabrikation Akt.-Ges.) Oct. 13, 1936, No. 27756. [Class 72] In a device for hardening rail heads or similar longitudinal surfaces, a plurality of nozzles are arranged in staggered relation on both sides of the rail head &c., and also transversely thereto so that the jets of cooling medium are directed in the same or substantially the same plane as the surface of the head &c., both heads and nozzles being relatively movable in the longitudinal direction of the rail &c. The nozzles 1, Fig. 1, are arranged as shown and the rail is moved past the nozzle. To prevent the quenching medium from contacting with other parts of the rail than the head, protective plates 2 with sharpened edges 3 which press resiliently against the rail below the head are provided. In another form, Fig. 2, the rail 4 is fed with its head downwards by rollers 5 mounted in a frame 13 past a quenching device 12 consisting of staggered slotted nozzles 6, which are arranged in pairs connected with a common feed pipe 7. Each pair of nozzles is carried by a lever 8 which are connected to a pin 9 carrying a roller 10, and is provided with a projecting free end having an aperture in which the pin 9 carrying the next pair of nozzles is mounted. After quenching, the rail is fed forward by rollers 15 resiliently and movably mounted in a frame 14.
