Abstract

476,526. Feeding sheets. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. June 9, 1936, No. 32790. Convention date, June 10, 1935. Divided out of 476,502. [Class 100 (i)] In a sheet - feeding apparatus for feeding sheets from a stack and forwarding them to a printing or like machine, the stacks are supported by transversely spaced chains 53, the lower ends of which hang free in such a manner that a second stack-holding platform 52 may be positioned upon the lower portions of the chains while a platform 52 is supported upon their upper portions. When a pile 51 is nearing exhaustion, a second pile of sheets 51a is placed upon a platform or skid 50a formed with legs 98 by means of which the pile may be moved transversely of the machine to a position in which the skid may be engaged by a pair of cross-bars 52 fitted with hook members 99, Fig. 5, of double form, the upper members 100 being engaged by cross-pins carried by the freely hanging endless chains 53 which depend from sprocket gears 90 against which the chains are held by rollers 93. The chains are driven step-by-step or continuously as described in Specification 476,502. The hook 101 is arranged so as to be just clear of a chain pin below the pin engaged by the hook 100, so that damage is prevented in the case of breakage of the upper hook or its pin, the pile being in that case supported by the lower hooks. To ensure correct side register of the sheets, a bend-end crow-bar 105 is inserted in one notch 104 of a plate 103 attached to the crossbar 52, and the skid 50a is moved to the left so as to register the left edge of the pile against a gauge bar 106. The pile is so placed on the skid that the edges of the sheet extend slightly beyond the left edge of the skid, and when the sheets contact with the gauge the inner runs of the chains are inclined slightly to the right, so that in their upward movements they tend to hold the pile against the gauge 106.
